Using PDFCreator

Open the document you want to create an encrypted PDF from.
From the File menu select Print...
Choose the PDFCreator printer and click the Print button.
When the PDFCreator window opens, click the Options button at the bottom.
In the Options window, find Formats in the left sidebar, select PDF, then select the Security tab.
Set the following options:
Check the box to Use Security.
Under Encryption Level set to High (128 bit - Acrobat 5.0 and above).
Under Passwords, check Password required to open document and Password required to change permissions and password.
Under Disallow User to and Enhanced Permissions configure any additional document options you deem appropriate.
Click the Save button.
Edit and/or add any other PDF metadata you want, then click the Save button.
Give the PDF a name and location to save to, and click the Save button.
In the Enter Passwords window, set both the User Password (required to open PDF) and Owner Password (required to make any changes to PDF - do not give this password to the recipient). Make sure these passwords are different from each other.
Click OK to save the PDF.
Please note that the changes you made in the PDFCreator options are sticky and unless you go back and uncheck Use Security, any future PDFs will also prompt you to set a password for encryption.
